Why do some drivers exceed the speed limit?

On Behalf of | Nov 5, 2024 | Auto Accidents

Speed restrictions are in place to prevent accidents and keep drivers safe. Lower speed limits are usually implemented in built-up areas and school zones. While most drivers adhere to these restrictions, some do not.

Speeding not only increases the chances of an accident, but it can result in much more serious injuries. Why do some drivers exceed the speed limit

Impatience

Drivers often need to reach their destinations by a certain time. For example, a commuter may need to be at work by 9 am. Or, a driver may be taking a passenger to an important medical appointment. Running late can result in stress and a temptation to exceed the speed limit.

Thrill-seeking

Most vehicles today are capable of reaching speeds in excess of 100mph. That is a lot of power, particularly for young people who are seeking a thrill. While most young drivers are responsible, studies indicate that they are much more likely to speed than older drivers. The reasons for this are often complacency, peer pressure and attempting to show off.

Distractions

Speeding isn’t always a deliberate behavior. Sometimes, a driver may speed simply because they are distracted. Common distractions include talking on the phone, speaking to passengers and being lost in thought. When distracted, a driver is not likely to pay attention to what speed they are doing.

A crash at high speed is much more likely to result in severe injuries and fatalities. If you have been injured and the driver who caused the crash was speeding, you may be entitled to personal injury compensation. Seeking legal guidance can help you to show that the other driver was negligent.
